§ Mr. Gregory
asked the Minister of Health what are the figures for live births 16W in hospitals in the Stockport area; how these compare with the rest of the Manchester Regional Board area; and what action he will take to improve conditions for maternity cases.
§ Mr. K. Robinson
In 1964, 59 per cent. of the live births in the Stockport County Borough area took place in hospitals. The proportion for the Manchester Hospital Region as a whole was 70 per cent. Fifty-six per cent. and 68 per cent. respectively were in National Health Service Hospitals. A new maternity unit of 120 beds at Stepping Hill Hospital is planned to start next year.
