§ 8. Sir D. Rentonasked the Minister of Overseas Development whether he is aware that people with good professional, scientific and specialist qualifications are needed for service in their own overseas countries more than they are needed in the United Kingdom; and what steps he is taking to persuade them to serve their own countries instead of increasing the overcrowding of the United Kingdom.
§ Mr. GreenwoodI agree that the developing countries need people with these qualifications. The Government, however, is not prepared to bar from employment in this country, persons with professional and other qualifications who want to come here and who can make a valuable contribution to our economic development and the maintenance of our social services. In many cases, such persons return to their own countries with enhanced qualifications and experience. Students from overseas are admitted for limited periods and are normally expected to leave when their studies are complete.
