§ Mrs. Shirley Williamsasked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what proportion of local education authorities, covering what proportion of school-age children in England and Wales, have already introduced or are proposing to introduce comprehensive secondary school schemes.
§ Mr. CroslandFollowing the issue of Circular 10/65 last summer, all local education authorities have been considering their intentions and many have been and are in consultation with my Department. The situation is therefore fluid and it is impracticable to say with any accuracy at any particular point of time how many are proposing to introduce comprehensive schemes. In January, 1965, there were 262 secondary schools classified as comprehensive, maintained by 48 local education authorities and containing 8.5 per cent. of all secondary school pupils.
