§ Mr. Juddasked the Minister of Overseas Development, in view of the advice in this sense of the Inter-University Council on Higher Education, if he proposes to grant a further £250,000 to the University College of Rhodesia, despite its present inability to ensure multiracialism in its affairs.
§ Mr. BottomleyThe Government have carefully reviewed the position and, although recognising the difficulties which the College has faced and continues to face, we have decided that the condition which we laid down in November, 1965, for continuing to pay the grant is still met. The first quarterly payment in respect of 1967 will accordingly be made. We shall keep the situation at the College under close review and will need to be satisfied that the College is continuing to function as a multi-racial institution under its Charter before we make the remaining 385W three quarterly payments. This means that we shall continue to be closely interested in such matters as the number of Africans entering the College.
The Inter-University Council did not specifically offer advice about the Government's grant. It resolved that its own services to the University College should not be suspended until further notice. The Government will continue to support the Inter-University Council, as well as London and Birmingham Universities, in this.
