HC Deb 09 March 1965 vol 708 cc65-6W
Mr. Armstrong

asked the Minister of Labour what was the total number of men in regular employment in West Durham on 31st December, 1954 and 1964, respectively; how many are now travelling to jobs outside the area; and what estimate he has made of the migration that has taken place during the last 10 years due to declining industry.

Mr. Marsh

The estimated number of male employees in employment in the areas covered by Consett, Stanley, Lanchester, Crook, Shildon, Spennymoor and Bishop Auckland Employment Exchanges was 60,800 at mid-1954 compared with 57,400 at mid-1963, the latest date for which figures are available. I regret that the other information asked for is not available.
