HC Deb 04 March 1965 vol 707 cc279-80W
48. Mr. William Clark

asked the President of the Board of Trade what was the number of bankruptcies among estate agents and travel agents for each of the past five years.

Mr. Mason

The number of bankruptcies of estate agents and travel agents for each of the past five years is as follows:

Year Estate Agents Travel Agents
1960 1 3
1961 15 2
1962 9 5
1963 19 5
1964 10 1

The figures for 1964 are provisional.

49. Mr. William Clark

asked the President of the Board of Trade how many representations he received from members of the public who had suffered loss of deposits paid to estate agents and travel agents in each of the past five years.

Mr. Mason

I cannot answer this Question precisely. The best estimate which I can give is about 1,500 representations (including representations to official receivers) as regards estate agents for 1960–4, and about 40 representations as regards travel agents for 1960–3. For 1964 the Board of Trade were made aware that rather more than 2,000 customers of travel agents lost their money.
