§ Mr. Gowerasked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will make a reassessment of the need to retain any of the air-raid shelters of the Second World War, with a view to ensuring the early removal of the majority of them.
§ Mr. George ThomasMany existing shelters might well be of value in any future emergency, and the current practice is to authorise demolition at public expense only where a shelter is structurally unsound, a danger to health or an obstacle to approved development. My right hon. and learned Friend is always prepared to consider proposals from local authorities for demolition within these categories or in other exceptional circumstances.
