HC Deb 07 July 1965 vol 715 cc226-7W
70. Mr. Buchanan-Smith

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland if he is satisfied that the present regulations governing the transport of children to school in rural areas do not cause unnecessary hardship; and whether he will seek power to give special assistance to local authorities where transport of schoolchildren is particularly costly.

Mr. Ross

Education authorities have power to provide transport for less than the statutory walking distances where they consider it necessary. I will be glad to look into any particular case. Sparsity of population is one of the factors allowed for in the calculation both of General Grant and Exchequer Equalisation Grant.
