asked the Minister of Housing and Local Government if it is his policy to encourage local authorities to build houses for sale; and if he will authorise loans for this purpose.

My right hon. Friend is always ready to consider proposals from local authorities to build for sale where it seems that this will make a useful contribution to meeting local housing needs without prejudicing their primary job of building houses to rent.
