HC Deb 21 December 1965 vol 722 cc432-3W
Sir M. Galpern

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what number of additional teachers would be required in Glasgow if the city were to enjoy the staffing standards reached in Aberdeen, Dundee, and Edinburgh, respectively; what steps he is taking to redress the maldistribution of existing staff; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Ross

The table below shows the additional teachers which Glasgow would require to achieve parity in staffing standards with Aberdeen, Dundee and Edinburgh. As regards the second part of the Question, I must await the report of the Committee appointed earlier this year under the chairmanship of Dame Jean Roberts.

Following is the table:

ADDITIONAL TEACHERS REQUIRED IN GLASGOW
On staffing standard of: Primary Schools Secondary Schools Total
Aberdeen 2,277 461 2,738
Dundee 221 124 345
Edinburgh 838 reduction of 211 627
Glasgow (actual) 3,163 3,225 6,388

NOTE: The figures in the table are based on pupils in primary and secondary departments at January, 1965 and teachers in primary and secondary departments at October, 1964.
