Mr. Cousins

The latest available figures are for the triennial review undertaken in January, 1962. It is estimated that 271,100 scientists and technologists were then employed in the United Kingdom.

Included in this were

Central government (including Armed Forces and U.K. A.E.A.) 26,300
Local government 7,900
Teachers in higher education 18,300
Private sector 149,000

The figures for the 1965 review should be available early next year.
