asked the Minister of Transport when he will announce his decision on the proposed new road system for Houghton-le-Spring including the diversion of the A.690.

This proposal by Durham County Council is being considered by my Department and the Ministry of Housing and Local Government. We intend to hold a joint local public inquiry into the proposals, but it is unlikely that that will be possible until later next year.

A decision on the road proposals cannot be reached until the necessary public inquiry has been held and all objections considered.
