HC Deb 04 August 1965 vol 717 cc324-6W
52. Mr. George Jeger

asked the Postmaster-General whether he is aware that the proposal to issue a stamp incorporating a swastika in the design will be offensive to many who suffered under that symbol; and whether he will withdraw these stamps.

53. Mr. Weitzman

asked the Postmaster-General whether he is aware that there is concern among many people at the appearance of a swastika upon a British stamp; and whether, in view of this, he will cancel the proposed issue of such stamps.

54. Sir I. Orr-Ewing

asked the Postmaster-General whether he is aware that the appearance of a swastika on a British stamp will be offensive to many who suffered in the war; and whether he will withdraw this stamp.

55. Sir B. Janner

asked the Postmaster-General whether he is aware that the swastika is regarded as a recognised emblem of the advocates of genocide; and whether he will refrain from issuing any further stamps bearing a swastika imprint and destroy those which have been printed.

Mr. Benn

The stamp referred to is one of a block of six designs depicting different aspects of the Battle of Britain. The broken swastika, half covered by the sea is shown on the shattered tail fin of a Luftwaffe bomber that has been shot down and is sinking into the English Channel. Above, four R.A.F. fighters ride triumphant. Since this is what the Battle of Britain was all about I do not propose to withdraw the stamps.

Mr. Kenneth Lewis

asked the Postmaster-General whether he will cancel the proposed issue of those stamps bearing the swastika to be issued in celebration of the 25th anniversary of the Battle of Britain.
