HC Deb 02 August 1965 vol 717 cc204-5W
Mr. Stratton Mills

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs if he will make a statement on the British Council courses overseas for young volunteers.

Mr. George Thomson

At the request of the Voluntary Service Overseas, the British Council arranges short regional courses for volunteers, usually after they have had two to three months' experience overseas, as a supplement to the courses arranged in this country before departure. The Council held one such course in Eastern Nigeria in 1964 which included seminars held by leading Nigerian writers, civil servants and educationists. The Council is arranging courses this year in a number of countries, including India, Ghana and Sudan. Such courses can provide a more satisfactory introduction to the overseas society than can be given entirely in this country.
