HL Deb 12 May 1964 vol 258 cc228-30WA
THE EARL OF SANDWICH

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What are the figures of net immigration for each of the last five years from India. Pakistan, East and Central Africa, West Africa and West Indies respectively.

LORD DERWENT

Since 1st July, 1962, when Part I of the Commonwealth Immigrants Act, 1962, came into force, comprehensive statistics for all persons subject to immigration control under the Act have been maintained. The following table gives the information requested for the periods 1st July, 1962, to 31st December, 1962, and 1st January, 1963, to 31st December, 1963:

Net Balance 1st July 1962–31st December, 1962 Net Balance 1st January, 193–31st December, 1963
India 3,050 17,498
Pakistan —137 16,336
East and Central Africa —26 3,208
West Africa* 1,897 4,106
West Indies† 3,241 7,928

* Excluding Gambia for which separate statistics are not maintained.

† Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, Barbados, Leeward and Windward Islands and British Guiana.

Such figures as are available for previous years are in no way comparable as it was necessary up to 30th June, 1962, to rely upon estimates of the number of Commonwealth citizens passing through the ports, and no estimates are available in respect of the former Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland. The following table gives such information as is available:
