HC Deb 04 June 1964 vol 695 cc207-8W
Miss Vickers

asked the Secretary for Technical Co-operation if he will make a statement on the payment of salaries, compensation and pensions to British officers, formerly serving in Zanzibar and their dependants.

Mr. Carr

Since at present salaries, compensation and pensions are not being paid to these officers by the Zanzibar authorities, the sums due have been, and will continue to be, advanced to them by the British Government until arrangements for resuming payments are made in agreement with the Government of the United Republic of Tanganyika and Zanzibar. A Supplementary Estimate to provide for these payments will be presented in due course. Meanwhile necessary drawings will be made from the Civil Contingencies Fund. The question of responsibility for these payments is under discussion with the Union Government.
