HC Deb 04 June 1964 vol 695 cc188-9W
50. Miss Vickers

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether, in view of the fact that there is a shortage of police in the country, he will take steps to provide for the formation of cadet corps for young people on the lines of the Air Training Corps so that they may be encouraged to join the police service on reaching the required age.

Mr. Woodhouse

Many forces have full-time paid cadets. At the end of April there were 3,400 boys and 184 girls in full-time training with police forces in England and Wales, and the cadets are an invaluable source of good quality recruits for the police service. One or two forces also have part-time unpaid cadets, who attend for training once a week, and it is open to other forces to follow their example. This is a recent development, and my right hon. Friend is taking a close interest in its progress.
