HC Deb 04 June 1964 vol 695 c189W
52 and 53. Mr. Grimond

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department (1) if he will set up medical centres to deal with pregnancy and psychiatric cases at present often sent to approved schools;

(2) what steps he is taking to separate medical cases from cases of delinquency in approved schools.

Mr. Brooke

I am not convinced it would be right to separate boys and girls sent to approved schools as being in need of care, protection or control from those committed for delinquency. Boys and girls in either category who are found to need residential medical or psychiatric treatment are transferred to appropriate establishments, and I do not think any new kind of establishment is needed for them. Special arrangements for pregnant approved school girls are being considered.
