HC Deb 30 July 1964 vol 699 c423W
Mr. Hirst

asked the Minister of Labour if he will give the numbers employed in industry in Shipley and Bingley in 1951 and at the latest available date, respectively.

Mr. Godber

The following is the information:

Estimated numbers of employees in employment in the Shipley Employment Exchange area (which includes Bingley)
Mid-1951 Mid-1963
Extractive industries (agriculture, forestry, fishing, mining and quarrying) 300 200
Manufacturing industries 15,900 14,800
Construction industry 1,600 1,300
Other industries and services 5,2006 600
Total 23,000 22,900

NOTES 1. Figures are available for the midyear only; those for mid-1954 are not yet available.

2. Because of changes in the Standard Industrial Classification effective from mid-1959 accurate comparisons cannot be made in the various categories between mid-1951 and mid-1963. For example, motor-repairing, boot and shoe repairing, wholesale bottling and production and printing of cinematograph film were deleted from the list of manufacturing industries and added to the list of other industries and services.
