§ 50. Mr. Parker
asked the Minister of Public Building and Works whether he will take steps to remove dead trees in Trafalgar Square and replant with large trees.
§ Mr. Rippon
As indicated in my reply of 20th April, the existing trees will be felled this autumn. Following consultation with the Royal Fine Art Commission,10W I have decided that those on the north side should not be replaced immediately, so that the effect may be seen of opening up the view of and from the National Gallery. If it appears that the trees on the north side should also be replaced, this will be done later. The new trees will be plane trees about 19 ft. high.
