HC Deb 01 July 1964 vol 697 c234W
115. Mr. Slater

asked the Minister of Aviation if he will make a statement about the future of Middleton St. George Airport.

Mr. Marten

Control of Middleton St. George has been transferred from the Ministry of Defence to the Ministry of Aviation pending sale to the local authorities. We hope to ensure that civil operations are not interrupted and that new services can begin as planned.

An additional grant of £150,000 has recently been promised to assist development of air communications in the North-East region, on condition that this aerodrome and Woolsington (Newcastle) are run jointly by a single consortium of local authorities.
