§ Mr. GalbraithThe total mileage of new roads built in England and Wales between 1951 and 1963 was 11,920 miles. The cost to the central government and to local authorities was £250 million. Both figures exclude roads that have been improved; the cost figure also excludes the substantial but unknown expenditure by private developers. Separate figures of the cost of repairing and maintaining these new roads are not available and cannot be readily obtained.
