§ 69. Mr. Jegerasked the Minister of Transport what progress has been made in the provision of automatic safety devices and of warning systems at unmanned railway level crossings, with particular reference to Moorends, near Doncaster, where there have been several fatal accidents.
§ Mr. MarplesThe British Railways Board is developing a new and relatively inexpensive automatic warning light system for unmanned crossings. Discussions are taking place between interested parties about payment for the wider provision of safeguards at farm-type crossings. Of the three crossings which I think the hon. Member has particularly in mind, I am informed that one may be closed to vehicles now that there is access to a nearby public crossing. I understand that the Railways Board is negotiating with the local authority about the installation of automatic flashing lights at the other two.
