HC Deb 21 April 1964 vol 693 c154W
Mr. Wall

asked the Secretary of State for Commonwealth Relations and the Colonies if he will now make a statement about the future of the university in Salisbury, Southern Rhodesia.

Mr. Sandys

The conference which ended on 14th April endorsed the need to maintain and develop the College including the Faculty of Medicine as an independent institution open to all races for the advancement of knowledge in Central Africa and within the international community of Universities.

The financial problems involved are at present being considered by the British and Southern Rhodesian Governments.

We recognise the importance of the College and we are prepared to make a substantial contribution to help in maintaining it.
