§ 57. Mr. Goodhewasked the Minister of Aviation whether, in view of the time required to develop a new engine specially for the Hawker P1154, he has given consideration to the use of twin 118W engines, based on the Rolls-Royce Spey, as used in the Trident; and what decision he has reached.

The concept of the P1154 was from the beginning based on the BS100 engine of the Bristol Siddeley Company, which pioneered this type of engine.
Rolls-Royce, at a very late stage, submitted proposals for developing a twin version of the Spey for this aircraft.
Their proposals have been very carefully considered.
The Spey is a fine engine for the applications for which it has already been selected but I have decided, subject to contract, to adopt the BS100 as being more suitable to meet this particular requirement.
In order to spread the load as efficiently as possible over the engine industry I am asking the two companies to discuss the work that Rolls-Royce could do on the Bristol Siddeley programme.
