HC Deb 24 July 1963 vol 681 c167W
14. Mr. Thorpe

asked the Minister of Transport whether he will publish a map showing those parts of the country's road system which are not yet considered to be satisfactory for today's needs.

Mr. Marples

This is an interesting suggestion. But the total mileage of roads in England and Wales is 167,800. Of this I am responsible for the 6,500 miles of trunk roads and motorways and the local highway authorities for the rest. I would hardly think it feasible to show on a single map, in sufficient detail to be worthwhile, which of all these roads require improvement.
