HC Deb 23 July 1963 vol 681 c161W
Mr. Godman Irvine

asked the Civil Lord of the Admiralty what steps were taken to ascertain whether the "Green Ranger" could be salvaged before it was decided to sell her for scrap; and why five months elapsed before she was offered for sale.

Mr. Hay

"Green Ranger" was inspected by Admiralty Salvage Officers as soon as possible after her stranding and again a week later when the tide was at its lowest. As a result it was decided that salvage during the winter months was impracticable. Subsequently, the ship broke in two and salvage became out of the question. Disposal of the vessel commanded no particular urgency and tenders were sought from a wide field. The ship does not constitute a danger to navigation.
