HC Deb 04 February 1963 vol 671 c12W
84. Sir H. Legge-Bourke

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what discussions he has had with the Potato Marketing Board regarding the import of potatoes; what tonnage he visualises entering the United Kingdom; and for how long he proposes permitting imports to continue.

Mr. Scott-Hopkins

The Ministry is in constant touch with the Potato Marketing Board throughout the year and the decision to allow in imports was made after discussing with the Board the results of its census of potato stocks as at the end of December. The amount of imports required will depend on the extent of frost damage to home supplies At present imports are being allowed in freely, but the position will be carefully watched so that if the risk of shortage disappears import controls may be reintroduced.
