Mr. Sydney Irving

asked the Minister of Health how many training and occupation centres for mentally handicapped persons are provided by local authorities and how many by voluntary organisations; and what is the total number of places these centres provide and the numbers of these which are for adults and juniors, respectively.

Mr. Braille

At the end of 1961 local health authorities and voluntary organisations provided respectively about 480 and 20 training centres, with some 24,000 places, for the mentally subnormal. It is estimated that about 57 per cent. of these places were for children.

Mr. Sydney Irving

asked the Minister of Health how many mentally handicapped persons are on waiting lists for places in occupation centres; what proportion of these are juniors; and how these figures compare with those for the last five years.

The numbers of mentally subnormal awaiting training in local authority training centres were as follows:
