HC Deb 11 April 1963 vol 675 cc188-90W
Captain Kerby

asked the Secretary of State for Commonwealth Relations what sums of money have been paid in the last five years by way of gifts, loans, grants-in-aid or subsidies by Her Majesty's Government to the three South African High Commission Territories, Tanganyika, Nyasaland, Uganda and Kenya respectively.

Mr. Sandys

The gifts, loans, grants-in-aid and subsidies paid by the British Government to the three South African High Commission Territories, Tanganyika, Nyasaland, Uganda and Kenya in the United Kingdom financial years 1958–59 to 1962–63 inclusive are set out in the table below. Some moneys for the joint benefit of Kenya, Tanganyika and Uganda were paid to the East Africa High Commission and its successor, the East African Common Services Organisation, and are shown under the latter heading in the table.

It is not possible to distinguish between grants-in-aid and subsidies, and the two are therefore grouped together.
