asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they will state the numbers employed in the Naval Law Department and the Directorates of Army and Air Force Legal Affairs respectively, differentiating between commissioned officers and civil servants; and whether they will indicate the numbers of officers and officials possessing legal qualifications in the Department and Directorates concerned.

NOTE: Legal advice is obtained by the Admiralty from the Judge Advocate of the Fleet, Treasury Solicitor and, when necessary, from the Law Officers.

Officiating judge advocates at Naval courts-martial are drawn from general service Officers who have legal training and experience. There are in the Fleet eighteen Officers qualified as barristers, and twenty-three with considerable legal experience.
