HC Deb 25 October 1962 vol 664 c224W
Sir Richard Glyn

asked the Secretary of State for War how many exercises involving one or more divisions and the use of tactical nuclear weapons have been carried out in the last ten years; and in which of these exercises were nuclear casualties assessed by categories as in Southern Command Exercise Ethandown in 1955.

Mr. Profumo

In the last ten years there have been three exercises involving two or more divisions and the use of tactical nuclear as well as conventional weapons. These were all in Germany. Exercises involving only one division have been more numerous.

It is our normal practice in exercises of this type, as in Exercise Ethandown, for the umpires to assess casualties in relation to the weapons assumed to have been used.
