HC Deb 25 October 1962 vol 664 cc227-8W
Mr. Boyden

asked the Minister of Public Building and Works what plans he has formulated since the publication of the Emmerson Report to ensure that activities in the building industry in Scotland and the North-East are sufficient to reduce unemployment amongst building workers from its present high level to that of the national average of unemployment in the building industry.

Mr. Rippon

As my right hon. Friend the Chancellor of the Exchequer announced on 3rd October, the Government have recently authorised an additional £70 million of investment to be spent principally on housing and education over the next eighteen months. Within this figure special attention is to be paid to Scotland and the North-East. Expenditure on roads in the North-East is to be doubled and more factories are to be built in these districts.
