Mr. Ellis Smith

asked the Minister of Health (1) why so many people died of respiratory diseases in December, 1961, and January, 1962, within a 40 miles radius of Manchester; what were the main causes of death; and if he will give figures for areas within a 40 miles radius of Manchester, Boghead, Loch Katrine, Brixham, Devon and Bournemouth;

(2) if he will set out in tabular form the number of people who suffered from respiratory difficulties for the average three years prior to the Clean Air Act becoming law and the numbers who died within an eight miles radius of Manchester, the same figures for each year since the new Act, and the same figures for within an eight miles radius of Liverpool, Stoke-on-Trent, Bournemouth, Boghead, Loch Katrine, and Brixham, Devon.
