HC Deb 20 February 1962 vol 654 cc39-40W
Mr. Jackson

asked the Minister of Defence whether, in view of the fact that Tristan da Cunha will never again be fit for permanent habitation, he will consider a transfer of the British nuclear testing ground to that island from Christmas Island.

Mr. Watkinson

It is not yet possible to say that Tristan da Cunha will never again be fit for permanent habitation. In any case it is very doubtful whether it would be feasible to transfer to Tristan da Cunha the extensive base facilities, including a major airfield, which exist on Christmas Island.
