§ 93. Mr. Russellasked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what estimate he has made of the revenue which would be lost if the Customs duties on tobacco were to be reduced to the level of those of the Common External Tariff recently agreed by the Council of Ministers of the European Economic Community.
§ Sir E. BoyleThis question does not arise. The rules of the European Economic Community provide for the elimination of protection on trade within the Community and for a common external protective tariff; but taxes for revenue purposes may be imposed by individual Member States at such rates as they may determine to secure the revenue required.
