HC Deb 20 February 1962 vol 654 cc33-4W
Mr. Brockway

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies what are the results of the geological surveys regarding mineral resources made in Bechuanaland.

Mr. Maudling

The results of the Government Geological Survey's work are published annually in the Department's Reports, the latest available of which I am sending to the hon. Member. Two coal fields have been investigated but in view of their situation and the quality of coal so far tested exploitation is uncertain. Two minor manganese deposits, one discovered by the Survey and both assisted by Survey services, are being worked. A small high-grade asbestos working is similarly assisted. Kyanite discovered by the surveys is no longer in production. No other discoveries have yet been proved of economic value. The surveys have had much success in locating underground water, which is of great economic importance to the territory. As a result of the Survey's investigations a number of mining companies are engaged in active prospecting.
