§ Mr. C. Hughesasked the Secretary of State for the Colonies to what extent the recent failure of the potato crop in St. Helena has affected the diet of the islanders; and what steps have been taken to make good the deficiency.
§ Mr. FisherThe islanders' diet has not been materially affected. The failure of the potato crop, due to bad weather, was only partial and, except at the end of October when, owing to late arrival of the supply ship, stocks of essential foods were low and there was some hoarding, supplies of potatoes have been sufficient. There have been ample rice supplies to cover any minor shortages.
