HC Deb 20 December 1962 vol 669 c254W
Captain Kerby

asked the Secretary of State for War how many British troops are stationed in British Guiana; whether they are being retained there at the request of Dr. Cheddi Jagan; and what is the average monthly cost to the Exchequer.

Mr. Profumo

The garrison of British Guiana, which consists of 1st Battalion Coldstream Guards and attached personnel, is about 700 strong. The garrison is there in pursuance of our ultimate responsibility for the peace and good government of the Colony. The monthly extra cost to the Exchequer is just under £10,000.
