HC Deb 19 December 1962 vol 669 cc196-7W
Mr. Worsley

asked the Minister of Transport whether he will now indicate his construction programme for the Sheffield-Leeds motorway.

Mr. Marples

As stated on 28th November in reply to the hon. Member for Batley and Morley, the preparation of this Scheme is bound to be difficult and lengthy, because of the further statutory processes and the complex engineering details. Construction will be put in hand as soon as these processes are complete and funds become available.

I can make no firm forecast at this stage. If all goes well, I hope that preparation of the Don Viaduct, and of some substantial portion of the roadworks, could be completed in readiness to start construction during the financial year 1964–65, the remaining roadworks following by stages thereafter.

Acquisition of the properties which will need to be demolished will probably be spread over a period of two years or so. It is my intention that nobody should be called upon to move until alternative accommodation has been provided or I am satisfied that he has the means of obtaining it.
