asked the Minister of Pensions and National Insurance if he will state the number of unemployed persons in receipt of National Assistance in the Motherwell area whose allowance is reduced by the operation of the wages stop; and what proportion this represents of the total number of unemployed recipients of National Assistance in that area.

Up-to-date figures about National Assistance allowances restricted by reference to earning capacity in accordance with Regulation 5 of the National Assistance (Determination of Need) Regulations 1948 (S.I. 1948 No. 1334) are not available, and such information is normally obtained on a sample basis for the country as a whole. Some information recently collated for other purposes, however, makes it possible to estimate that about 18 per cent. of the weekly National Assistance allowances payable to persons registering as unemployed in the area served by the National Assistance Board's Motherwell office are so restricted. The latest available figure for current authorisations of weekly allowances to persons registering as unemployed in this area is 982 at 27th November last.
