HC Deb 14 December 1962 vol 669 cc121-2W
Mr. Cleaver

asked the Minister of Transport whether he will introduce regulations to standardise mudguards on lorries and cars in order to prevent the muddy spray which is dangerous to other traffic, particularly on roads such as the Birmingham-London section of the M.1.

Mr. Marples

The provision of wings or other similar fittings to catch, so far as practicable, mud or water thrown up by the rotation of the wheels is already a statutory requirement for most vehicles. The difficulty of providing for different types of lorries and the many uses made of them prevent standardisation, but I am considering whether there is any way in which the present requirement can be improved.
