§ 48. Mr. Morrisasked the Secretary of State for the Home Department, what is the number of youths, sentenced to terms at detention centres, who have been found physically unfit; and what steps are taken to ensure that youths are medically examined before sentence.
§ Mr. BrookeOut of a total of 12,285 persons committed to detention centres, 221 had physical disabilities which made it necessary to restrict their participation in some activities, and three had to be discharged early on medical grounds. Courts have been informed of the physical standards at present required for full participation in the regime at detention centres, and the figures I have given suggest that due regard is paid to this consideration.
