HC Deb 05 December 1962 vol 668 cc199-200W
Sir M. Galpern

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland how Benjamin Thomas, a former policeman, was able to obtain a post as history teacher at Lindsay High School, Bathgate; what documents he was asked to produce; how long he remained in the post; if he resigned or if he was dismissed; and what instructions he has now issued to prevent a person from obtaining a teaching post by similar means in future.

Mr. Noble

I am informed by the education authority that the man concerned was engaged in a temporary

of out-patients who attended the Western, Royal and Victoria Infirmaries and Stobhill Hospital, Glasgow.

Mr. Noble

The information is as follows, the figures being for the year ended 31st March in each case:

capacity at Lindsay High School as a teacher of general subjects and not as a specialist teacher of history, and that he served for six weeks only, resigning a week before his period of appointment was due to end. The appointment of teachers is a matter for education authorities, but I am considering in the light of this case whether I can usefully amplify the advice which they have previously had from my Department about the checking of the certificates of persons entering their employment.
