HC Deb 03 December 1962 vol 668 c141W
Mr. Marten

asked the Minister of Transport what was the average number of vehicle accidents on trunk roads per mile in 1961 in England and Wales.

Mr. Marples

The precise information asked for is not readily available. Figures are, however, available of the numbers of persons killed or injured on all Class A roads (including trunk and Class I roads) during the 12-month period November, 1959, to October, 1960, since these figures were specially worked out by the R Research Laboratory. During this period there were on average 8 casualties per mile of Class A road, but this average conceals a large difference between roads in urban and rural areas.
