51. Mrs. Butler
asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will review the present system of dealing with breaches of prison discipline so as to allow legal representation to the prisoner.
§ Mr. Brooke
This matter was fully considered by a Departmental Committee appointed to review the system of punishments in prisons and other institutions, whose Report was presented to Parliament in 1951. This Committee recommended that prisoners charged with offences against prison discipline should not be allowed legal representation; and the reasons for the Committee's recommendation remain valid today.122W
53. Mr. J. Wells
asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will take steps to give prisoners from the Channel Islands, accommodated in English prisons, the same right of appeal regarding prison discipline as English prisoners.
