HC Deb 02 August 1962 vol 664 c120W
44. Mr. Fletcher

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many letters or petitions he has received from Commonwealth citizens in respect of whom recommendations for deportation have been made.

Mr. Brooke

Twelve.

47. Mr. Fletcher

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether he will take steps to ensure that before making an order for deportation of a Commonwealth citizen based upon a recommendation of a magistrates' court, he will obtain the fullest possible information from the probation officer with regard to the background and home surroundings of the offender, and the conditions under which he or she has been living.

Mr. Brooke

A probation officer is an officer of the court, and I cannot order the deportation of a Commonwealth citizen except on the recommendation of a court, to which a report by a probation officer is available if the court so wishes.

55. Mr. N. Pannell

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many recommendations for deportation of Commonwealth immigrants convicted of living on immoral earnings have been made to him since 1st June, 1962; and how many such recommendations he has confirmed.

Mr. Brooke

None.
