HC Deb 18 April 1962 vol 658 c87W
Mr. Wade

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer how many university teaching posts are at present unfilled; and how many university teachers left their posts during 1960–61.

Sir E. Boyle

Universities have no fixed establishment of teaching posts, but appoint such numbers of staff as their funds permit. I regret, therefore, that the information asked for is not available. I understand that a recent survey of eleven university institutions showed that, in June, 1961, 5.6 per cent. of existing posts were vacant.
