§ 58. Mr. G. Thomasasked the Minister of Health whether he is aware that the number of practising midwives in 1960 was 500 fewer than in 1955 and that the Royal College of Midwives relates this reduction in numbers to the inadequate salary paid to midwives; and whether he will make a statement on his proposals to recruit more midwives to the National Health Service.
§ Mr. PowellThe number of midwives employed in the hospital and local health services increased during this period by about 680 or 5 per cent. Later information suggests that the upward trend continues.
