HC Deb 24 October 1961 vol 646 cc91-2W
Mr. Emrys Hughes

asked the Secretary of State for War to what extent he has studied the effect of the Berlin situation on recruiting for the Army.

Mr. Profumo

It would not be practicable to quantify this. There has been a steadily increasing improvement in Army recruiting this year, which must be largely attributed to the success of various measures taken by Her Majesty's Government. International tension often produces recruits, but in this case it is likely to have had only marginal effects.

Mr. Emrys Hughes

asked the Secretary of State for War how many men joined the Army in Leeds in September.

Mr. Profumo

Fifty-six.
